Potassium nitrate is the most widely used oxidizer in pyrotechnics. It is used for a whole range of pyrotechnics, the most important one being the manufacture of black powder. Potassium nitrate is a white powder or long crystals ( like needles ).

Potassium nitrate is commonly used as a fertilizer, and can be bought cheaply in garden supply stores, or farm stores ( basically in any shop that sells fertilizers )
